About Us

A Consultancy Built Around
Careful Thinking

Lalang Consulting exists because good communications work takes time, local knowledge, and a genuine commitment to the organisations we work with.

Our Story

How Lalang Consulting Came to Be

Lalang Consulting was established in Kuala Lumpur by practitioners who had spent years working within and alongside Malaysian organisations navigating significant communications and public affairs challenges. What we noticed, over time, was that most advisory engagements moved too quickly — producing outputs before the underlying questions had been properly understood.

The name reflects something intentional. Lalang grass — common across the Malaysian landscape — grows in dense vertical stands, resilient and quietly structured. It is not decorative; it is functional. That is how we think about communications work: not as something visible and polished for its own sake, but as something that serves the organisation's actual relationship with the people it needs to reach.

We work primarily with established Malaysian organisations — those with enough public visibility that communications and reputation questions carry real weight. Our clients tend to be navigating transitions, entering new public domains, or simply recognising that their communications practice has not kept pace with the complexity of their situation.

Engagements are deliberately structured to allow time for real work: stakeholder conversations, considered analysis, and written deliverables that carry practical value beyond the engagement itself.

How We Work

Our Working Standards

The way we conduct engagements reflects the same care we ask clients to apply to their own communications.

Client Confidentiality

All engagement details, client names, and organisational information are treated with complete discretion. We do not reference client work publicly without explicit written permission.

Written Scope Agreements

Every engagement begins with a clear written scope document agreed by both parties, covering objectives, deliverables, timeline, and fees. No ambiguity about what the work entails.

Regular Progress Dialogue

Clients receive structured progress updates at agreed intervals throughout the engagement. We do not disappear and resurface only with the final deliverable.

Data Handling Care

All personal and organisational data gathered during engagements is handled in accordance with Malaysian PDPA requirements and our internal data protocols, which exceed the minimum standards.

Honest Assessment

If our assessment is that an engagement would not serve the client's interests, we say so in the initial conversation rather than accepting work that would not deliver genuine value.

Clear Deliverables

Every engagement produces written outputs — framework documents, assessment reports, or recommendation summaries — that the client organisation can use and reference after the engagement closes.

Our Values

What We Believe About Good Advisory Work

Effective communications advisory in the Malaysian context requires more than familiarity with messaging frameworks and stakeholder mapping tools. It requires an understanding of how institutions actually work here — the relationships between commercial organisations, regulators, media, and civil society that shape how communications are received and how public affairs questions are navigated.

We believe that communications work done well is substantive work. It involves understanding the organisation's actual behaviour, examining the gap between how an organisation sees itself and how stakeholders experience it, and then developing approaches that address that gap honestly — rather than simply managing perceptions around it.

Reputation, in our view, is not something an organisation can construct independently of its behaviour. The communications and public affairs advisory we offer is most valuable when clients approach it with that understanding — when they are genuinely open to what the stakeholder assessment reveals, and willing to let the findings shape their approach rather than simply seeking endorsement of decisions already made.

Lalang Consulting operates independently. We are not affiliated with PR networks, media groups, or lobbying practices. That independence allows us to give clients advice shaped entirely by their situation — not by the referral relationships or platform interests that sometimes influence advisory recommendations in the wider industry.

A conversation before a commitment

We are happy to speak with organisations that are thinking through a communications or public affairs question, without any obligation attached to that initial conversation.
